One of the world's most popular musicals, 'Fiddler on the roof' tells the story of Tevye the Jewish dairyman and his trials and tribulations in the Czarist russia of 1905. Tevye, his wife Golde and their five daughters are one of the hardworking families of the Jewish community living, as there forefathers did, by following the dictates of 'tradition'. A pious man, Tevye tries to raise his five daughters according to Jewish tradition and the ways of the good book. However, he finds their lives disrupted not only by anti-semitism, pogroms and evictions, but also by new ideas about politics, courtship and love. Eventually, Tevye and the local community realise their old way of life has changed forever. They set out form their beloved village of Anatevka to find new lives in new lands, taking with them only a few meagre possessions and ther abiding faith in God.
