The King and I (1997 - Adult)

General Information :: Principals :: Other Cast :: Production Staff :: Crew :: Multimedia

Based on the novel, "Anna and the King of Siam", which itself was partly based on fact, this is one of the best loved musicals of all time. Telling the story of a widowed schoolteacher, Anna, who travels to the Orient with her young son, the show is a beautiful example of one of the greatest writing partnerships ever, Rogers and Hammerstein. As the story unfolds, Anna is introduced to the very different way of life that exists in the Siamese Royal Palace, which includes the King and his many wives. Attracted to the country and its people Anna helps the King in his efforts to persuade visiting dignitaries that Siam is civilized and not barbaric. However, the King is torn between the desire to modernise his country and his belief in his own absolute authority which is based on ancient custom. This eventually leads to a difference with Anna over his "right" to punish a young girl who loves someone other than the King, a difference that is only reconciled in the final dramatic scene. Including such marvellous songs such as, "Hello Young Lovers", "Getting to Know You" and "Shall We Dance" to name but a few, this is one of the truly magical musicals…
