Cabaret is a vibrant and poignant look at life in the decadent Berlin of the early 1930s. Set against the background of the rise of Hitler, it tells the story of a young American writer, Clifford Bradshaw, who arrives in Berlin looking for inspiration for a new novel. He meets Ernst Ludwig who introduces him to both landlady, Fraulein Schneider,(who provides Cliff with a place to stay) and the fabulous Kit Kat Klub, where the outrageous floorshow is overseen by the bizarre Emcee. At the Kit Kat Klub, Cliff also meets the singer Sally Bowles, an English girl with a mysterious past.
Cliff and Sally are drawn to each other and it seems that love is in the air at Fraulein Schneider’s guest house as another tenant, likeable Jewish fruit shop owner, Herr Schultz, embarks on wooing the landlady. This happy state cannot continue, however, as Cliff realises the true threat of the Nazis, a threat to which Sally is oblivious. Meanwhile Schneider wonders how life would be under Hitler if she were married to a Jew.
Full of powerful imagery and fantastic songs, such as Willkommen, Why should I wake up, Tomorrow belongs to me and of course, Cabaret itself, the show touches every emotion and is a spectacular musical.
