Arthur Kipps, homeless orphan, and employee of the overbearing Mr. Edwin Shalford, is in love with his childhood sweetheart, Ann Pornick. But Kipps' plans to make their friendship more permanent are thrown into turmoil when he falls for Miss Helen Walsingham, an educated young woman of upper class background. Not only that, Kipps soon finds himself the beneficiary of an inheritance which would allow him to live like a "Proper Gentleman".
